The Best Acoustic Guitar Strings

When I was learning to play the guitar, I went through a pack of strings at least every two weeks. Sometimes I needed a new set every week. Most of this was due to what I call "string crud", or the nasty dirt and grime that builds up from your fingers. No matter how much I washed and dried my hands, I seemed to always end up with this string crud.

String crud results in strings getting a "dead" sound. They are extremely difficult to keep in tune. This is from the changes in string length caused by the built-up string crud. Your guitar may sound in perfect tune when playing an E Major chord but then be completely out of tune when playing a D Major. This is a slight change in intonation due directly to the string crud.

String crud also has another detrimental effect on the string. It causes the metal to rust. Playing a guitar with rusty or tarnished strings is not a pleasant experience.

The elimination of string crud is a major factor in my choice of the best acoustic guitar strings. A side effect of the elimination of string crud is the other major factor in my choice of the best acoustic guitar strings. By getting rid of string crud, you get the best possible sound from the guitar possible. Not only does the guitar sound good the first day you put on the strings, but it sounds good for months. I've never seen another guitar string that lasts even close to this long. I've tested everything out there and Elixir guitar strings are without a doubt the best acoustic guitar strings there are.

Elixir acoustic guitar strings come in three different flavors. They offer two version of their "Nanoweb" technology and they have a "Polyweb" version. Each feature a light coating of a special material that keeps off the string crud, and it works better than any other string coating technology you'll find. The nanoweb strings have a very thin layer, while the polyweb is a little thicker. I personally prefer the polyweb strings.

The nanoweb strings, although brighter, don't seem to last as long as the polyweb, and they are only brighter for the first couple of days. The coating wears off on them it seems. The polyweb coating seems to last for months. The polyweb strings don't have a dull sounds that you would expect from a coated string though.

For me, in the past when I first put on new guitar strings, I hated the "new string" sound. That bright twangy sound was sometimes more than I could handle. It was only after a few days of playing that they strings actually started to sound good. With polyweb, you get that sound right from the start.

One thing to keep in mind when reading reviews on other sites, is that many of the players aren't very experienced and don't understand the value of Elixir strings. I've got to say that the sound I get from Elixirs is much better than from other strings. They make a mediocre guitar sound like a very good guitar. I own an old Yamaha FG345 acoustic that sounds like a nice Martin D35 with these strings. I've heard Ibanez acoustic/electrics that sound almost as good as a Taylor, just because they have these strings on them. The sound is superb.

Reviews are usually posted by people who really love a product or really hate it. Most people who really love these Elixir strings are too busy playing their guitar to worry about posting reviews for strings. I've just always had trouble with other strings. I've been looking for the best guitar strings since 1992. I've tried every string available, almost. Elixir acoustic guitar strings are without a doubt the best acoustic guitar strings available. They are well worth the money.
